Choosing a checking account that doesn't cost you
No monthly fee, free ATMs nearby and fair overdraft rules.
A checking account is where your money comes and goes. It shouldn't quietly cost you every month. A few minutes comparing the fee schedule can save a lot over a year.
What to look for
- No monthly maintenance fee, or one you can easily avoid
- Free ATMs where you actually are, or ATM fee refunds
- Clear overdraft rules, ideally with no overdraft fees
- Free online bill pay and transfers
- FDIC or NCUA insurance
Read the fee schedule
Every bank publishes a fee schedule or account disclosure. Look for monthly fees, minimum balances, overdraft and returned-item fees, ATM fees and paper statement fees.
