Stop paying overdraft fees

Opt out, link savings, and set low-balance alerts.

Overdraft fees are charged when you spend more than you have and the bank covers it. They can add up quickly, but they're among the easiest fees to avoid.

Ways to avoid them

  • Opt out of overdraft coverage for ATM and everyday debit card purchases; by law banks need your consent to charge overdraft fees on these
  • Link a savings account for overdraft protection transfers, and ask what it costs
  • Turn on low-balance alerts by text or app
  • Choose a bank or credit union that doesn't charge overdraft fees
  • Keep a small buffer in checking

Already charged?

Call and politely ask for a refund, especially if it's your first time or you're a long-time customer. Many banks will refund at least one.

General information. Overdraft policies vary by bank and change over time. Nickel Savings isn't paid by any bank or financial company.
